How we go about Creating a Skinning Project

Accessiblity pannel for DNN or DotNetNuke skins
Here at SalarO we have a large range of Design Services for your DotNetNuke Portal. Some are very simple Skinning Projects and some are very complex Advanced Smart Responsive DNN Skinning. The advanced approach that renders your content for both Desktop and Mobile devices also may require more advanced module level skinning to ensure all the content is responsive. We therefore can combine the work with Catalook E-commerce skinning or More Advanced Module Level Skinning with specific requirements.

Here are the steps we typically make to building you a Custom Skin for DotNetNuke

  1. We like to hear your requirements, for example if it is a new site or a revision of an existing design
  2. We write an Art Direction and pass it by you to ensure we have captured the requirement and what the designer will see conforms to your expectations
  3. We have 2 in house designer that can produce up to 2 visuals independently and we try one of them out with the Art Direction.
  4. Once the first visual is done, you can give us your observations on the visuals and we make necessary revisions. Our second designer can in the mean time come up with an independent design if required.
  5. There can be many revisions and we work until you are happy with the final visual that goes to our 4 man skinning team.
  6. Skinning team will either produce the standard DNN skinning or will go for the more advanced Responsive CSS Framework which will naturally take longer to produce. Once they have done with the skin and install it on your site or on our demo portals. once approved we pass the source to you.

voyage

We have been building Custom Skins and Custom UI elements jQuery or Flash for DotNetNuke for almost 7 years. Therefore, we can manage any type of requirements. Please see our showcases or our case studies to highlight some of the success stories.

All about Custom Skinning for your DotNetNuke portal

From £155 per Static Skin, that has one single skin to accommodate all conditions. This skin will not have any container or separate admin skin.

£275 Basic Skin-conversion which allows JQuery image slider in the homepage. This is the one with one homepage skin and one internal skin and no containers.

£350 One prototype followed by skin pack consisting of home skin, inside skin and admin skin and 2 containers to match the design.

£450 We provide two prototypes and number of revisions which is ideal for a site with many variation of skin design either containing various images per skin type or various containers to accommodate variety of Module. Each comes with varying sizes or skin for your home page as well as different skins for the further pages. One also has the Flash animation showing on the home page as well as up to two containers to match the design. That is if the skin needs it. This package has a reasonable level of support, to allow for several “tweaks” during the development according to your needs.

£600 is an average price guide for a corporate website which is as above, whilst allowing a number of revisions and we are geared to comply with a more rigorous approval process.

We design it from scratch and tailor to your company's collateral design protocols and specifications. Designing for corporate sites will take longer and generally we go through a more detailed set of milestones and therefore the prices would vary. Please use the feedback forms and give us your exact requirements for us to be able to work out an exact price.

£745 is an average price guide for a corporate website completed with mainly CSS and absolute minimum tables. Please note that DNN may require one table for the content panes to ensure better cross browser compatibility. This kind of work as above allows for number of revisions and we are geared to comply with a more rigorous approval process.

£895 is an average price guide for a Responsive CSS Framework that is fully XHTML compliant corporate and enterprise class website, which is as above whilst allowing a number of revisions and we are geared to comply with a more rigorous approval process. The reason for the extra price quoted, is the complexity in producing a skin with both CSS and XHTML requirements that can function within the boundaries of DNN. We design it from scratch and tailor to your company's collateral design protocol and specification. Designing for corporate sites will take longer and generally we go through a more detailed set of millstones and therefore the prices would vary. Please use the feedback forms and give us your exact requirements, for us to be able to work out an exact price. The Responsive CSS Framework would mean that the site renders well on all browser sizes - Please see http://dotnetnuke.co.uk  for example of this approach.

£80 is an average price guide for using Telerik Menu rather than DNN menu. We recommend you using Telerik standard menu and PanelBar for their outstanding cross browser and XHTML compliance. For example this site is using Telerik Horizontal menu and Telerik Panel bar for the side menu. Please note the clean behaviour on multiple devices including Tablets.

£100 is an average price guide for using Mega Menu rather than DNN or telerik menu. Please note that Mega menu is more difficult to setup and for you to use in the long run. However, it does really help sites with big site map. For Examples of Mega Menu - Please see http://storeintegrator.com

iPhone and iPod Touch Developement

phone & salaro

iPhone & iPod Touch project is SalarO's first study of DotNetNuke usability within the enormously successful iPhone & iPod mobile devices arena. It is predicted that by end of this year, there will be Approx 100 million devices around the world. The Apple OS is now well defined, so now is the time to also produce sections in your site that is user friendly in this environment. If you need to check your site on iphone and don't have one, check it here.

If you don’t have an iPhone or iPod touch to test your site then please have a look attestiphone.com/, you owe yourself some tinkering time. Keep in mind that - like all technology - the prices will come down eventually. It's a virtual certainly that within the next couple of years everyone will either have one or they'll be using similar copycat devices that are bound to join the competition in time. The touch sensitive interface is making developers think a bit differently about software development. The future is a place where mice and physical keyboards may become scarce.

What is so attractive about iPhone and iPod Touch
Both The iPhone and iPod Touch are expected to be connected to the Web at all time, either with local WiFi hotspots for a full throttle experience or via G3 or Edge network on iPhone. The main attractions are small size, long battery life, stunning user interface. This means that developing for portable devices no longer has to mean building occasionally connected, miniature, underpowered user interfaces. Both Devices are good at displaying standard web pages that you may never need to develop an application specifically for the iPhone. Your iPhone users can likely use your pre-existing DNN with few, if any, problems.

Most web pages display flawlessly by default on the iPhone/iPod. I've surfed countless DNN sites with few problems. Nonetheless, if you want to develop an application specifically for iPhone users, then it can certainly be done with carefully crafted iPhone/iPod DNN SKIN.

What are the existing problems with DNN on iPhone?
We initially tried to use mobiNuke 2.00.02 – to make our DotNetNuke Mobile Friendly. However, we did not have much luck with the module being very buggy and zero support from the developer (may be he is on vacation). We therefore went about solving the issues with slight modifications of the core and just a optimized skin. The rest of it will be achieved by mirroring modules or keeping it simple with dedicated copy borrowed from salaro.com.

Making DNN more usable for iPhone users is to understand that a standard sized button works fine for a mouse click, but the relatively fat size of a person's fingertip benefits from a larger target. Elements can be made more attractive and usable in other ways. For example, the iPhone will automatically convert hyperlinks that contain telephone numbers into hot spots that automatically dial that number when clicked. This assumes the iPhone recognizes the link as a phone number. To ensure the iPhone will recognize the link as a phone number, format it like this:

<a href="tel:1-425-555-5555">1-425-555-5555</a>

What's Supported by DNN? What's Not?
Browsing the DNN sites the iPhone/iPod Touch version of Safari does have a few limitations, However, these limitations are surprisingly few and far between when compared with the capabilities of other so-called ‘internet enabled' devices. Notable in the list are

  • Adobe Flash. This is due to the fact that plug-ins and downloads of all kinds are prohibited on the iPhone/iPod.
  • Silverlight as a development option.
  • Downloads

Summary
The iPhone/iPod's ultra-rich, always connected browser environment is destined to redefine the way mobile device applications are built. Star Trek Technology is reality and A few touches of an iPhone is all it takes to convince virtually anyone that they are experiencing the future of user interfaces. A new wave of iPhone aware software is developing so I suggest you hop on and surf it to success!
