Welcome to SalarO's Raising Awareness Newsletter

Latest scientific studies add further evidence that human activity has pushed carbon levels in the atmosphere in recent decades to their highest levels in 800,000 years and that associated global warming has produced an array of changes for the Earth and its life.

New, deeper ice cores drilled in the Antarctic have produced data on carbon levels in the atmosphere going back further than ever before – now 800,000 years. They show that the concentrations of the major greenhouse gases in the air trapped in the ice through all the layers laid down over that time period has never been at levels as high as they are today. Current concentrations of CO2 are 28 per cent higher and for methane are 124 per cent higher than their next highest peaks over those aeons, researchers from the University of Berne, Switzerland say.

To encourage awareness here at SalarO we have decided to offer a 20% discount on all future custom skins for organizations that are updating their site with environmentally friendly imagery or their business is actually actively promoting reductions in Carbon Emissions. Please see further reading in Al Gore's great site on the subject.

Here at SalarO, we are strong advocates of global warming awareness. We currently are developing a large Carbon Exchange portal that should complete by end of this year. We have also a number of special offers for you. For this month’s we have reduced the prices of all our Packaged Skins by 20%. For Custom work given to us during the hot summer months, the 20% discount also applies. We further pledge to give 2 free skins per custom skin project, so you can apply them to any other sites you may have. Please note that this offer does not apply if you already have developer discounts.

AccessiblityWe have made further improvements to the Accessibility Module we have produced please see our SkinPack with this great Accessibility Control panel.

This months SalarO team has successfully produced an advanced skinpack that changes the colours of the skinpack like a chameleo. Please have a look by clicking here, This further helps our progress towards XHTML compliancy with our new packaged skins and any new custom skin we produce. Any new releases of skins are running on 4.82 and we are testing them for 5.0 beta. would be using the new DNN menu and combined with streamlined minimum table maximum DIV layouts. and therefore, they will have a much better compliancy for XHTML.

Fantastic new DNN 5 is being tested now and so far only minor issues have been reported. we are currently testing the latest DNN 5.0 BETA..

Packaged skins by SalarO.comSee our new Packaged skin packs. We are now using the NEW DNN MENU rather than SolpartMenu which is slowly is being phased out, we would now be suggesting that you should consider to change the skin that we have previously produced for you to either Telerik Menu or one of the more advanced third party menus available for DNN. DNN's own new default Nav Menu is also fairly XHTML compliant; however, it still has some issues with iphone. Nevertheless, it should prove much faster and cross browser compatible, and since Jon Henning is one of the main core team members, therefore he would ensure that the menu is improved with every revisions on DNN.

Please note that some of the new mobile devices such as the extremely popular iphone, do need Telerik or some of the newer third party menus to comply with these mobile devices.

Please fill out the quotation form or just email me direct at support (at) salaro (dot) net and we would be very happy to quote a great price for you.

DotNetNuke 5.0 the best yet..

DNN 4.8.2We are very excited with the prospect of DNN 5.0 which if current testing goes well could be released within a months. This version will have a lot of new features, DotNetNuke Corporation has done a great job in making such a great release. This exciting new release offers native support for Visual Studio 2008, Windows Server 2008, and IIS 7.0.

So far we have experienced no issues in our new installs or upgrades what so ever. We strongly suggest you upgrade to this version as soon as it arrives. If you are using a very early release, we find that the best method of moving forward is to create a fresh 4.8.2 and slowly port your content across. Please ask us for a quote to make this happen for you with our content team. We are indeed doing this more and more for clients.

Building bridges between LAMP! and DotNetNuke...

Bridging between DotNetNuke and LAMPRecently we have had a client with a number of Joomla 1 Portals that he needed to move them to DNN. This project helped us experience for the first time the LAMP market that is improving in parallel with DNN.

Joomla 1.5 running on PHP 5.x, MySQL 5.x and Apache 2.2 is proving to be very stable indeed. The other popular platform famous for its simplicity is WordPress. This is why SalarO has finally decided to also offer services for this platform. PHP 6.x will bring much higher level of security to this platform and therefore, this is something that SalarO can no longer afford to ignore. SalarO has now setup a server running LAMP and Joomla 1.5.3 and is ready to both develop as well as host customer sites on this platform and show the ways that organizations could run both side by side and use their advantages for a better web presence.

We naturally feel that if one is starting a fresh portal, then it is much better to run on DNN. However, if one has existing investments in LAMP then it may be good to use Joomla for standard CMS web serving and use DNN for complex Application that requires high security. There are some aspect of Joomla that are much better than DNN. and some aspect of DNN that is way ahead of Joomla, so this is not an easy choice for users.

SalarO's dedicated Joomla team to help customers on Joomla platform to move to DNN as well as help companies that have existing Joomla or wordpress sites to unify the look and feel of their site with DotNetNuke sites in parallel. We are very excited with these projects and to show the potentials for collaborations between the two platforms, we are porting number of Joomla Templates to DNN as well as porting number of DNN packaged skins to Joomla to show the feasibility of this concept. We also plan to produce modules that can bridge and port data across the platforms.

Learning to get most out of DotNetNuke.

By watching our quality training videos you can have your DNN web site looking and working the way you want in no time at all.

DotNetNuke Training provides you with:-

New modules ready for release.

New Modules by SalaroSince the last newsletter we have two great new software under development. First is a Wedding List Module for DNN where is probably more applicable to UK couple planning a wedding. We have developed a module that allows you to put your wish list for presents you like to receive from friends and family attending the wedding. each user that would like to purchase it for you will sign in and make it unavailable for others to see. therefore no chance of getting the same present twice.

The second one is an Enhanced Survey which is finished and should be available for sale next months.

The new store pack of goodies are almost ready for release, see SalarO STORE as well as PinkandBlueGifts.com store that is now finished and open for business. At the moment for a limited period we are setting up this store for you for a fixed price. Please email or click here to send us your requirements for a store and SalarO team can set it up for you at a fixed cost.

We are also working on porting some of the best of the Joomla modules to DNN. There are many of them that at the movement have no equivalent in DNN world.

Meet us in SalarO's Second Life & see our Store in action in 3D.
Second Life by SalarO

Second Life is an enhanced experience, and the experience way ahead of showing something using the 2 Dimensional Flash or the new SilverLight technologies. Second Life will give you an experience far more all encompassing; the 2D web can never give you. We are confident that this is the future and that it will spearhead the natural evolution of web. We are not saying it will replace Web 2.0 but it would most certainly transform it. Now we see that the big names in IT forecasting are also jumping on the bandwagon:-

The Internet is on the cusp of its next major evolution: Web3D. Within five to seven years, Web3D will deliver an interactive, impressive experience much richer than the static, text-oriented or even interactive graphical interfaces of today’s Web. In the new world of work that Web3D will enable, people will be represented visually by avatars that can move in space, communicate with others, and interact with objects and information — making the digital world seem more like the real world. Yet Web3D won’t leave the old world behind; it will integrate with the Web technologies we use today as well as existing and not yet invented business applications. Workers will use Web3D to teach and learn, innovate collaboratively, communicate and network, interact with and present information, and manage real-world systems.

Erica Driver - FORRESTER

SalarO's Second Life Site (sl.salaro.com) is going well with slowly number of hits going higher. However, we have been slow to leverage some of the new modules we are building for this portal. We hope to show you by the next Newsletter. DotNetNuke Island in Second Life has been running now for over 3 months. We have now almost completed the first commercial project in this area with the properties.co.uk section of the Hitched Island. Please visit the adjacent island in DotNetNuke and see the fantastic showroom for property related companies showing their offerings. Please see below some of the predictions that Forrester makes for Future of Web.

SecondLife news New Telerik Component for DNN

Second Life project is proving very complex and due to slow uptake, we find that it may take all of 2008 before it reaches mass audience..

It is exciting to announce that we have built a fantastic island in second life for DotNetNuke to help showcase products and services around both DotNetNuke technology as well as Second Life technology.

Both communities have a lot in common. Both applications are being built on .net using C# on both Mono, MS platform and large Communities. In short there is much to gain in building bridges between these two different but complementary technologies.

Come and visit us in SL and see the potential of this great new platform projected as must have as post WEB 2.0 technology.

Hitched Island is almost finished. Please come and see us and see how it can help Real Estate Businesses in promoting their Offerings in the real world.

Telerik has released a preview of the new RadEditor Prometheus provider for DotNetNuke 4. The provider configuration remains basically the same, so people should have no problem enabling and configuring the new editor in DNN.

The installation for the new provider is greatly simplified. We tried to eliminate most of the manual steps, which were required with the original RadEditor HTML editor provider. Basically, the provider now comes packaged as a module PA, so you can install and enable it directly from the web site. Detailed installation instructions (both for the automatic and manual installation) are available in the distribution archive.

The first thing that you will notice is that the new editor does not have a RadControls folder. All the important files are stored in the ~/DesktopModules/TelerikWebUI/ folder. Since DotNetNuke defines CSS for some global HTML elements (such as anchors, list items, etc.), we have included an extra CSS file, which will fix the editor skin to look OK in DNN.

As soon as the skin object is available we shall be using it for all our Custom Skinning Projects.

Properties island is finished on second life. Please see some images about it here.

We would also this months be running a series of surveys on community preferences for verity of subjects such as Skins and templates, and most needed modules in DNN world.

Finally the long awaited OpenSim on your PC but by creating new back end protocols for OpenSim the Tribal Media team has introduced a key innovation to OpenSim - the decentralized grid. Tish interviewed the two founders of Tribal Media last months. Please see a great blog by Tish Shute by clicking here

Everybody brings their own computing power [to Tribal Net] and we’ve packaged it for end users. I mean that basically joe schmoe can install it, set it up, and run it. Because OpenSim’s been very tech heavy, our goal with Tribal Net is to make Opensim more accessible for the wider layers so to speak. Also we’ve done some work on the map so that now when people go online their regions show up on the map. When they go off line the region disappears [it can also be persistent]. That is also a radically different approach from Second Life .

Tribal Net is very easy to install and you will find your region immediately embedded in a network of other regions running on other PCs. Try it out
