Intel's 3D tech redefines the transistor - Allowing us to Sustain Moore's Law Intel's 3D tech redefines the transistor - Allowing us to Sustain Moore's Law
By Salar Golestanian @ 05 May 2011 :: Article Rating
I recently discussed "Is Moore's Law dead? What happens if CPU speed does not keep up with our demands?" in my blog. Where doubling the number of transistors on a silicon device every two years was no longer possible. This is because the 22-nanometer limit in semiconductor substrate could not be reduced with current Transistor Technology. However, with Transistors entering the third dimension, this limit is no longer relevant as we can carry on doubling the number of transistors on a silicon device every two years in the third dimension. This is revealed in the latest news release by Intel.

A leaked document according to Daily Telergraph contains unconfirmed reports that one of the detectors at the Large Hardon Collider at CERN near Geneva had picked up signals that could be the long sought after particle called 'Higgs Boson'. Last week we saw at Fermi lab the experiment that contradicted the existence of Higgs Boson I reported here

Unifying gravity with the other three interactions ( the electromagnetic, weak, and strong interactions) would provide a theory of everything (TOE), rather than a GUT Grand Unified Theory. GUTs are often seen as an intermediate step towards a TOE. And now suddenly on April 6th, Mystery signal at Fermilab hints at 'technicolour' force. Last week at Tevatron collider scientists spotted evidence of new particles that might point to a previously unidentified force of nature or yet another force, "The Fifth Force"

I loved this article in Mashable by Amy-Mae with 7 Superb Short Films Shot with Cellphones. I am amazed at the quality of some of the work done by creative people using their cell phones and edited with low cost programmes like Adobe Premier, Element - The two that I really loved were the Space Balloon and the Commuter.

ESA’s second Automated Transfer Vehicle will be launched on today. Watch it here live. This flight is representing the third of five back-to-back launches to the International Space Station in a 2-month period, the European Space Agency stands ready to the launch the ATV-2 (Automated Transfer Vehicle 2) spacecraft on a multi-month mission to deliver thousands of pounds of supplies to the leading orbital outpost. The mission will also hold the distinction of being flown to orbit on the 200th Ariane rocket launch, the 56th launch for the workhorse Ariane 5 variant. Nasaspaceflight.com has great pages for the details of this mission.

Scifiwood.com is built with the founding idea that Science Fiction of yesterday becomes the technology of today. We have another two example now with ReWalk both develops and markets walk restoration devices for people with lower limb disabilities, Including paralysis. And another another amazing tool for peaple with hearing loss with "The CapTel 800i" that provides real-time, word-for-word captions of what is said over the phone on a bright screen built into the phone.

Professor Brian Cox made astrophysics sexy in Wonders of the Solar System, and now he is back for this three-night live show exploring the stars. From their eyrie in the University of Manchester's Lovell Telescope, Brian gives co-host Dara O Briain (a self-confessed frustrated astronomer) a crash course in astronomy, while gadget-obsessed Jonathan Ross goes back to basics as he learns to navigate the night sky using a pencil and paper. First Blog post on Scifiwood

With a new year just starting, it is a good time to list some of my favorite products that were only ideas at some point in the past and now they have come true. Here is a list to name a few, Submarine, iPad, iPhone or Laser Guns, where all of these were Science Fiction that has turned out to be accurate predictions. In the next decade there are going to be more Sci-Fi turning Practical Science.

Scottish scientists have built a 1,000-core processor, claiming that this chip could make desktop computers 20 times faster. For example, currently the fastest pc runs an Intel® Core™ i7 Processor Extreme Edition which is about 6 core.  However, Dr Wim Vanderbauwhede and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Lowell have created a processor which effectively contains more than a thousand cores on a single chip. A few months ago Gordon Moore stated that More Law is dead. It is nearly 40 years since the publication of his law which states the transistor density on integrated circuits double about every two years. This is quite obvious as at one point one will find we cannot build a transistor with just a small number of atoms.

Google.org is the philanthropic arm of Google, and this week it has blogged about its shiny new tool at the COP 16 climate conference in Cancun. It is a database that will help scientists and conservationists track and analyse changes in Earth's environment, and hopefully slow deforestation as well as any new forestation projects going on around the globe.Original post at Salar Golestanian Blogs

Having a lot of interest for Space Physics, and therefore I try hard to follow what is happening at LHC and simplifying the language used in the communications coming out of LHC is a great help to me so I like to share them. The LHC is the world's biggest ever physics experiment, and by studying conditions close to those just after the big bang, it could solve some of science's deepest mysteries. Original post at Salar Golestanian Blogs

Antimatter was first predicted1 in 1931, by Dirac. Ever since then there has been 100s of Science Fiction books and Movies made with this concept at its heart. StarTrek Enterprise Engine run with Antimatter. In reality the work with high-energy antiparticles is now commonplace, and anti-electrons are used regularly in the medical technique of positron emission tomography scanning. Original post at Salar Golestanian Blogs
